One
of the biggest problems with living along
the Lake Ontario shoreline can be erosion.
When seasonal water levels change or are
altered by humans, or a big storm hits
the area, many property owners are left
with eroding shorelines and banks. This
is especially true for properties with
dunes or bluffs.
There are many methods of controlling erosion along dunes or bluffs.
This CD will only address vegetative options that protect against erosion
while enhancing wildlife habitat. For more information about other
methods of controlling erosion, visit New
York Sea Grant's Great Lakes Coastal Processes and Erosion web site.
By planting vegetation on
dune and bluff areas, you will greatly
reduce the incidence of shoreline erosion
and enhance or improve the wildlife habitat.
If you haven't cleared the plants from
your shoreline, leave them alone. If
your dune
or
bluff is already barren, try planting vegetation.
Dunes and bluffs require
different types of vegetation for stabilization.
